How to Evaluate Universities Beyond the Rankings
Rankings measure inputs. You need to measure outcomes. Here is how to tell the difference between a university that looks impressive and one that will actually serve your goals.
The Problem With Rankings
The most widely used university rankings - QS, Times Higher Education, US News - are built primarily on academic reputation surveys, research output, and faculty-to-student ratios. These are inputs: measures of how a university is perceived by other academics and how much it publishes.
None of these metrics tell you what happens to students after they graduate. They do not measure employability, salary outcomes, visa success rates, or career satisfaction. These are the metrics that matter to you.
What to Evaluate Instead
Graduate Employment Rate
Look for
Above 85% employed in field within 12 months
Watch out for
Data unavailable or only 'employment' (not field-relevant) is quoted
Programme Accreditation
Look for
Recognised by industry or professional bodies in your destination market
Watch out for
Institutional accreditation only, with no industry or professional recognition
Faculty Research vs. Teaching Balance
Look for
Professors actively teaching your core modules with office hours
Watch out for
Senior professors on paper, adjuncts in the classroom
Peer Network Quality
Look for
Alumni in roles you aspire to, reachable and willing to connect
Watch out for
Alumni lists unavailable or concentrated in unrelated industries
Location & Market Access
Look for
Campus in or near the job market you intend to enter post-graduation
Watch out for
Remote or rural campus with no proximity to your target industry
The Verification Shortcut
The fastest way to evaluate a university for your specific situation is to speak with 2-3 students who completed the same programme, at the same campus, in the past 24 months. They will tell you more in 30 minutes than any ranking, brochure, or open day ever could.
That is exactly what Edoriva exists to facilitate.
